Kawthoolay

Kawthoolay
Or Kawthulay, the country of the Karens (Kayins). The name literally means the "flowery land," or "black land" (the latter referring to land that must be fought over). It denotes the territory claimed by the Karen National Union when it initiated an uprising against the Burmese central government in 1949, located around the present Thai-Burma border. However, the Revolutionary Council also used the term to refer to Karen (Kayin) State from 1964 to 1974.
